You have a cat (or two or more) and the litter box always smells....Here are some easy tips to keep your kitties bathroom sanitary....

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cats and litter box
  • bleach
  • hot soapy water
  • clean litter
  • Litter scoop
  • plastic grocery bags
  1. Step 1

To start with a clean box use new box or wash cat box in hot soapy water. I use a toilet brush that has not been used on a toilet. Makes it easier to use really hot water.

  2. Step 2

Rinse box thoroughly to remove soap and swish with about 1 cup of straight bleach to kill any germs....Again rinse well in hot water

  3. Step 3

Add clean, fresh litter to box. Remember to scoop daily or more often if you have multiple cats....

  4. Step 4

Change litter once a month for one cat and decrease time by a week for multiples....ie...2 cats would be every 3 weeks, 3 cats 2 weeks and more than 3 would be weekly (preferably with multiple boxes).

  5. Step 5

Enjoy a clean cat box and cats who willingly use their box

Tips & Warnings
  • Fresh step scoopable is the best litter I have found. With Nutriplan scoopable (cheap litter) being next in line.
  • I use plastic grocery bags to hold used litter on it's way to the trash can.

on 3/14/2009 Once a month depends on the litter used and if your cat uses the bathroom a lot. I know when my Momma cat has kittens I scoop 3 times a day and change litter once a week. But mostly I change about every 3 weeks for just my 2 kitties. My Momma cat is the one in my avatar :)

on 3/14/2009 Good ideas. I'm not sure my cat could manage with a once a month litter change, though. Even though I scoop a lot, after one week things smell pretty bad.
