Facial age spots are caused by a collection of pigment in certain areas because of repeated sun exposure. Even though they tend to appear later in life, age spots can also appear at a younger age due to a high level of sun exposure, and tanning salon visits. Several effective skin care products, and treatments are available to get rid of them. Here are some of them, and how they work in getting rid of age spots.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Any one of the below:
  • Vitamin C serum
  • Tretinoin cream
  • Niacin cream
  • IPL treatments, And
  • Broadspectrum sunscreen
  1. Step 1

Consider getting a series of intense pulsed light, also called IPL treatments, highly recommended by dermatologists to get rid of facial age spots quickly. Reported to make dramatic improvements, IPL treatments work by directing high intensity light in the green-yellow range at age spots. Typically administered in dermatologist offices, or medical spas, these treatments are known for their effectiveness, even though they are expensive.

  2. Step 2

See a doctor for prescriction for a retinoid. A retinoid (tretinoin)cream used in conjuction with an alpha hydroxy acid is reported to work in eliminating age spots. Alpha hydroxy acids help in exfoliating facial skin, and preparing it to better receive the tretinoin cream or gel.

  3. Step 3

Use a vitamin C serum. The overall brightening and sun protecting properties of vitamin c creams, qualify them as effective age spot treatments. Select a high quality serum with a stable, and permeable form of vitamin c, packaged efficiently to prevent oxidation from a reputed company.

  4. Step 4
    Niacin based cream

Apply a niacin based cream or lotion to slow down melanin production. A recent entry into the skin care market, creams formulated with glucosamine sulphate, and niacinamide are known to get rid of facial age spots. Although not a quick fix, these gentler products are worth a try. Several niacin based skin care products are available both in drugstores and speciality stores. Niacin creams that have a stronger concentration of niacin in a patented form are reported to work faster not only in getting rid of age spots, but also in improving skin barrier functions.

  5. Step 5

Apply sunscreen every single day irrespective of the weather. It is crucial to use optimal sun protection after getting rid of facial age spots to prevent new ones from forming. Use a SPF 30 photostable sunscreen that provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a high quality sunblock.
  • Eat a diet high in antioxidants that act like internal sunscreen.
  • Avoid mid day sun.
  • Avoid hydroquinone for its potential to irritate the skin.
