How to Determine Grade Point Average

Like it or not, Grade Point Average [GPA] is the main factor in determining success in both high school and college. This article will show you how to determine your Grade Point Average.

1. Your first step should be to examine your transcript and/or report card. In all likelihood, it will contain both a semester and a cumulative Grade Point Average. If not, proceed to step 2.

2. Use the GPA calculator at http://www.back2college.com/gpa.htm. The link is also located at the end of this article. To use the calculator, you must know your grades and the number of "hours" or "credits" for each course. In other words, you need to know how much each grade should be weighed in the GPA. If you cannot determine your GPA using this online tool, proceed to step 3.

3. It is possible to determine your GPA manually. Use a calculator if necessary. Begin by adding the value of each grade, using the following list as a guide:

   A = 4.00
   A- = 3.67
   B+ = 3.33
   B = 3.00
   B- = 2.67
   C+ = 2.33
   C = 2.00
   C- = 1.67
   D+ = 1.33
   D = 1.00
   D- = 0.67

   Each grade should be divided by its weight. For example, pretend that you got a B in a two credit class. In total, you took twenty credits in the semester. To calculate the GPA for the semester, you would first multiply 3 [the B] by .10 [2 credits divided by 20 credits]. Your grade point average so far is .30. Do the same math for each of you classes and add them up to determine your semester GPA.
