Things You'll Need:
- A blog
- A computer
- A little time
-
Step 1
Write quality content for your blog. Write about topics that you're interested and knowledgeable about, use lots of pictures, provide links for your readers, and give your readers useful information that will keep them coming back for more. And of course, always run the spell-checker before publishing!
-
Step 2
Use keywords effectively. Search engines have to be able to find your content for them to direct traffic your way. Use clear and descriptive titles and labels for your posts. For example, if you're posting your recipe for homemade pancakes a good title would be "Our Favorite Homemade Pancake Recipe". A less effective title would be "Our Favorite Saturday Morning Breakfast."
-
Step 3
Use a stat counter on your site. There are several free stat counters available for blogs. All you have to do is go to their site, type your info into their form, and cut and past their code on your site. You MUST have their code on your site for the stat counter to work properly. Once it's on, you can see exactly where your traffic is coming from. Knowing your audience is important so that you can write to their interests and needs. Some stat counters even enable you to see what types of things people search for to find you. Customizing your posts to fit what people are looking for can be one way to increase your traffic.
-
Step 4
Finally, and most importantly: NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK! The more people you "know", the more traffic you'll see. How do you network to promote your blog? 1. Read other blogs and be a consistent commenter. 2. Join blog networks that fit your blog goals (Christian mom? Stay at home mom? Work from home mom?) There are as many blog networks and blog rings as there are types of bloggers! Find, join, and participate in as many as you can. 3. Make it easy for fellow bloggers to link to you by providing them a simple button that they can add to their site (see photo with this step for an example). 4. Attend blog conferences or meetings to meet other bloggers and expand your network.
