Tired of paying an arm and a leg for a mechanic to perform a tune-up on your car or bike? This article will give you the confidence you need to perform your own tune-up, and save a fortune!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • New spark-plugs
  • Spark-plug socket
  • Spark-plug gapper

The first thing you will need to do is get under your hood, and locate your spark plugs. Make sure you know how many there should be before starting to make sure you change all of them at once. (A 6-cylinder has 6, a 4-cylinder 4, and so-on.)

  2. Step 2

Once you locate the plugs, you will need a 5/8" deep socket to make removal easy and painless. Simply place socket over plug, and once it "locks in", remove just like you would a bolt or screw. Remove the spark plugs, and compare to the nice, new, clean plugs. What a difference!

  3. Step 3

Now comes the only real tricky part of the procedure... gapping the plugs. Even though most plugs come pre-gapped for your particular car, ALWAYS check for yourself. You can pick yourself up a gapping tool from any auto parts store for about $1.00. The gapping tool is very easy to use, as it is clearly numbered. You want to slide the thinner part of the gapping tool into the opening on the spark plug, and slide it around until it stops. Read the number on the gapping tool. If it is too tight, simply slide the tool with a little force to open the gap. If it's too big of a gap, simply drop the spark plug (carefully) on the top of the gap, and re-measure with the tool.

  4. Step 4

Replace the spark plugs until they are finger tight, then use a ratchet to turn it another 1/4 turn. (if the ratchet is facing straight down, tighten until it aims to the left)

Tips & Warnings
  • Some people recommend disconnecting the battery before changing spark plugs for extra safety
  • Do not over-tighten the spark plugs
  • Make sure to not strip the thread on the spark plugs, or they are no longer any good.
