Choose California Wine

California wine is by far the most popular American wine, accounting for nearly 90 percent of American wine production. California would be the world's fourth top wine producer if it were its own country. Its warm climate and sprawling vineyards make the taste of California wine delicious on the palette.

However, there are so many varieties to choose from that picking a California wine can be a difficult task. Hopefully this guide will help point you in the right direction.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

CABERNET SAUVIGNON is the wine that put California on the world's wine map. It still stands as one of the strongest California wines. California's cabernet is a lush, full-bodied wine with a high fruit concentration. Its robust flavor makes it pair well with meats or pasta.

  2. Step 2

The best selling California wine is MERLOT. California merlot is very similar to its cabernet in that it has a rich, robust flavor. The taste of the merlot, however, seems to be more concentrated. Merlot pairs well with red meat and pasta, like Cabernet Sauvignon.

  3. Step 3

CHARDONNAY is a classic California wine. Originally one of California's most popular, it has now been replaced as some consider it "boring." However, the elegant, buttery taste the California chardonnay is still as pleasant as it ever was.

  4. Step 4

PINOT NOIR seems to be quickly becoming the new favorite. It has an intense, fruity style that many newcomers to wine can really appreciate, as the flavors are easily distinguishable. It is less robust than a California Cabernet or Merlot, but the Pinot Noir is still a well-bodied California wine.

Tips & Warnings
  • Although the four California wines above are the most popular, there are many other excellent types produced, such as Syrah, Zinfandel, or Sauvignon Blanc.
  • Ask your local wine seller for recommendations; they are usually very knowledgeable and eager to help you learn more.
