If you do any gaming or torrenting and your computer is behind a router, then you may need to setup port forwarding. Port forwarding refers to the practice of configuring a rule on your firewall or router that lets it know where to direct certain types of traffic. Since most home computer users share a single public ip address, the router needs to know which inside machine to direct traffic to when it is initiated from the outside and through your firewall. This article shows you how to configure port forwarding on a linksys router running ddwrt firmware.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Router running dd-wrt firmware
  • Ip address of host requiring port forward
  • Port number and protocol (udp or tcp)
  1. Step 1
    DD-wrt admin interface

Bring up your router administrative interface by putting the ip address of your router in your browser address bar. This is usually something like http://192.168.1.1 or http://10.0.0.1.

  2. Step 2

This will bring you to the status page of your router. From here, select the Nat/QOS tab. If you aren't currently logged in, you will be prompted now to enter your user name and password.

  3. Step 3
    Add a port forwarding rule

    Add a port forwarding rule

The first tab on the NAT/QOS page, is for port forwarding and that is where we need to be. Click on the "Add" button to create a new box for your port forward rule.

  4. Step 4
Add port number and ip address

Add port number and ip address

In the first box on the left, enter the name of the application that you are setting up the rule for, e.g. bit torrent or web server. In the second box enter the port number that you want forwarded. Under protocol, select "both". Enter the ip address of the computer on the inside of your network where the port will be forwarded. And finally, enter the port number that you are forwarding to. This is usually the same as the port number you are forwarding from. Check the enable box.

  5. Step 5

Select "Apply Settings" to immediately apply your new rule. Your service or application should now be able to send traffic over that port through your router to a computer on the inside of your network.

Tips & Warnings
  • The default port for Bit torrent is usually 6881, but check your torrent client's preferences menu to make sure that is what you are using.
