Going to court is a very stressful situation to endure. No matter what you're attending court for, these steps and tips will help to prepare you for whatever may come your way.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • High spirits.
  • Folder of all your documents (evidence, important dates, records, etc.).
  • Dignity
  1. Step 1

First off, you need to know how to appear and act in court.
Your appearance is very important. Some people may not have the same luxery as others in the clothes department, a judge can understand that, however, you still need to dress as nice as possible.

One thing you have to remember is not to wear a hat, that is disrespectful to the judge. Therefor, leave your hats at home or in your car.

  2. Step 2

How you act is very important. You need to remain calm and collected. The other party may say or do something that seems completely obsurd to you but you should never interupt them, the judge frowns upon this. Don't raise your hand or stand up randomly. When the Judge asks you a question, stay on the topic, don't go astray into something completely different. The judge wants the most straight forward answer.

NEVER interupt the judge when he's talking. Try not to wisper to anybody at any point. If you must say something to your council, write it down and slide it to them.

  3. Step 3

Now that you know the importance of appearance and your conduct, you must prepare all your documents before hand. Collect all evidence or legal papers you may have into a folder. Make sure you know the specific dates of such events, they are very important. Try to organize all papers by date so you know where to look if asked about certain things.

  4. Step 4

You need to have a game plan of what you want to get across to the jury and judge. Think about what is most important in proving your case to the court room. Prepare yourself for questions that may come up about your faults if you have any, you need to know how to respond to them.

  5. Step 5

Understand that things can ALWAYS go either way, however, it's best to go in with high hopes and your dignity in your pocket. Just make sure you have prepared yourself for the worst just in case something may not go according to your plan. By doing this, you are eliminating any big reactions that mite occur if you had not prepared yourself.

  6. Step 6

If you follow these simple steps and tips, you are surely going to do just fine when your court date arrives.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try not to stress yourself out, I know that it is tough, but it's something that will help you in the long run. Look to your friends and family for support during this time.
  • Don't let the other party get to you, don't show that you are bothered or affected by their actions in court by any means, this is what they want.
