The things you must do to get through your first heartbreak.

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You'll Need:

  • Good friends and determination!
  1. Step 1

Accept now that this is going to take time. You won't mend your broken heart next week, next month, or most likely, several months from now, depending on the length of the relationship. But, recognize that you WILL get through this!

  2. Step 2

Surround yourself with good friends. For women, your best girlfriends should be more than willing to be "on-call" during this time. This means that you can call them any time, day or night, and just cry. Many of them have probably been through it themselves, and their advice and support during the recovery process is greatly needed. If you're like me, this might mean putting your pride aside. Pick up the phone. You will feel much better, and it is a fantastic opportunity to bond with your friends through an often common experience.

  3. Step 3

Join a gym or frequent yours more often. Exercise releases endorphins into the brain, and thus it is scientifically proven that a good cardio work-out can make you feel happier. Equally as important, your body will take greater shape and tone, making you feel more attractive. Putting on those new pair of jeans for a Friday night outing or quiet dinner with friends will feel more amazing than expected, a priceless feeling when you are getting over an ex.

  4. Step 4

Finally, be willing to pamper yourself. Get a massage, get a pedicure, sleep-in, you have been through hell, you deserve it. Put yourself first right now. If you are someone who typically goes out of their way for others, let that take a second seat right now to your needs. Let this be a time of self-discovery. Learn to play the guitar, (I did!) join a book club, or start one of your own, have friends over to watch a favorite tv show, and make it easy by making it a pot-luck. You WILL get through this. And with some good friends and determination, it might even be fun!
