How to Convert Bitmap to PNG and Add Transparency With Paint Shop Pro

Portable Networks Graphics (PNG) images enable you to make certain aspects of an image transparent and have a smaller file size than GIF and TIFF files. This article explains how to convert a normal Bitmap (or this could be any other image format) to a PNG and to set part of the image to be transparent.

• Paint Shop Pro

1. 
    
   Example Bitmap Image

   Open your image with Paint Shop Pro, the image can be any image format. In this example I use a basic windows bitmap image which does not have any transparency information.

2. 
    

   This stop we are going to set the transparency color that you can select from the image. Open File Menu Option: Image -> Palette -> Set Palette Transparency

3. 
    

   Click OK on the warning dialog window that pops up

4. 
    

   Click on the image color that you want to be the transparent color in the image, and click ok

5. 
    
   Final Image with Transparency shown

   To view the transparent parts click on the File Menu Option: Image -> Palette -> View Palette Transparency

6. Save As Portable Networks Graphics (PNG) File type.
