Grooming your dog at home can save $200-$300 per year.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

First, it is necessary to wash your dog to remove any dirt from its coat. After washing, be sure to brush the dog thoroughly to remove any loose hairs. Washing and brushing the dog prior to using clippers also extends the life of the clippers and prevents them from overheating.

  2. Step 2

After the dog is washed, brushed, and has dried, turn on the clippers and carefully begin to run the edges along the area you want cut. Sometimes it is easier to have another person restrain the dog if the dog is scared.

  3. Step 3

After clipping the area, brush the dog again to remove any loose hairs. At this time you may want to inspect the dogs nails. If they are too long, carefully clip them with nail clippers made for dogs. Do not hit the quick-the soft spot in the nail housing blood vessels.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the dog is too uncomfortable while you are clipping, do it in short bursts.
  • Don't clip too close to the skin. This can result in razor burn and will be uncomfortable for the dog.
