A marriage counselor should not just be used when a marriage is in danger. A marriage counselor can be used as a preventative measure to ensure that your marriage thrives. They can help you to better understand your spouse and your marriage a little better.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your insurance. Some insurance plans will cover marriage counselors as long as they are a licensed therapist. The only catch may be that you need a referral from your primary care doctor for the insurance to cover the marriage counselor.

  2. Step 2

Get referrals for a marriage counselor from anybody that you. This includes friends, family, coworkers and pastors at church. If you know someone who has seen a therapist then you can at least start there. If there is a conflict of interest that therapist can refer you to another qualified marriage counselor.

  3. Step 3

Check the web sites of APA and NASWDC for licensed therapist in your area. They will also give you the information about what kind of therapy the therapist specializes in. Look for when that handles lots of cases about marriage for the best results.

  4. Step 4

Decide if you actually want to see a therapist or someone else that could be considered a marriage counselor. Your pastor or reverend at your church may be qualified to be a marriage counselor and they may be the best route for your relationship. There are also family counselors, which are less expensive than a therapist but they still undergo special training.

  5. Step 5

Meet with a potential marriage counselor in person. Not everyone is going to get along with the same marriage counselor. This is why it is important to meet face to face to make sure things are comfortable and personalities go together. If you can't get along with your marriage counselor there is really no point in one.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't rush into getting a marriage counselor. Just like a doctor, you should do research and pick the one that is best for you.
