Things You'll Need:
- Familiarity of the person being proposed to
- Familiarity of the couple's relationship
- A good listening ear
-
Step 1
Popping the question on a holiday is too easy. If your friend has their heart set on proposing during a holiday recommend doing it the day before or the day after. That way it is more surprising and much less cliche.
-
Step 2
Asking your significant other to marry you on the scoreboard at a sporting event is an absolute no-no unless the couple met at the game or that was their first date... If you catch wind that your friend is planning that kind of spectacle ask them the significance of the sporting event to their relationship. Most likely, there isn't one and the guy just thinks it would be cool. Saying it aloud and realizing that it is not personal will hopefully make him change his mind.
-
Step 3
A restaurant proposal is impersonal and something that should really be saved for scenes in 90's sitcoms, even if it's the scene of the couple's first date or their favorite restaurant. Many people don't want the proposal to be a spectacle. Suggest that the proposal happen after eating at the restaurant or go to the restaurant with family and friends after formulating the perfect proposal at home.

Step 4
Rose petals are so 20 years ago. If your friend has their heart set on roses or an ultra romantic proposal suggest a bouquet of roses and candlelit. The will be more romantic and much less cheesy than a trail of rose petals to the bedroom. And rose petals can stain carpet and sheets so they can get messy too!
