Things You'll Need:
- Computer
- Know-how
- W-2s
-
Step 1
Gather your 2008 tax forms. Before you begin you will need to figure out your adjusted gross income. This is often a factor in whether you qualify for free online tax preparation. If you were active military in 2008 you automatically qualify.
-
Step 2
Go to the Kentucky Department of Revenue website. On the home page there is a link to KY E-Tax. Click the icon. You will be taken to a screen and asked if you qualify to file your taxes online for free. Don't know? That's ok most people don't. Click the Free File Alliance icon and you will be taken to the Alliance home page. Here you will have the option to chose from several free file vendors to use for your taxes. The vendors are: Turbo Tax, Tax Slayer, Tax Hawk, and OLT (Online Taxes). Each company has the requirements for free file listed in its description. Be sure to make sure that you qualify before you begin the process.
-
Step 3
If you do not meet the requirements for free file fear not! Tax Slayer offers both Federal and State E-File for $9.95 and OLT charges only $7.95 each for e-filing.
-
Step 4
Pick a company and get started. These tax preparation companies are meant to be used by ordinary people. You will receive prompts to enter your tax information and your return will even be checked for errors. By e-filing you will avoid the paper rush that the IRS receives and you will receive your return faster.
