How to Stop Hiccups

Hiccups are contractions of the diaphragm that occur involuntarily. They are often the result of eating or drinking to quickly. There are single hiccups and extended hiccups; here are easy ways to cure your hiccuping.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    This works every time and requires solely your focus. In the middle of a hiccup attack, stop, and concentrate on clapping your hands before the next time you hiccup. The anticipation of your hiccup will ensure that there actually wont be another!

  2. Step 2

    Put a teaspoon of sugar in your mouth, and wash down with water. No more hiccups.

  3. Step 3

    Sit in a chair and lean forward to compress your chest against your thighs. Your hiccups should subside shortly.

  4. Step 4

    Drink a glass of ice cold water. The drastic change in temperature may turn off the esophagus hiccup response.

  5. Step 5

    Breathe into a paper bag.

  6. Step 6

    Have a friend give you a good scare or startle. It will both momentarily take you back to your days as a third grader and extinguish those pesky hiccups.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hiccups are frequently accompanied by the giggles.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have painful or frequent hiccups.

on 10/22/2009 My doctor said to try Fennel (liquid herbal exttract)
about $12.00 dollars @ health food store.I put 5 to 10 drops in water or hot tea.Also good for upset stomach WORKS GREAT I HAD HICCUPS FOR 12 HOURS!!! half glass later of Fennal & water GONE!!!
