How to Identify Emperor Penguins

There are sixteen different species of penguins. One is the Emperor Penguin. Emperor Penguins are the only penguins that breed during the winter. These penguins are easy to identify as shown below.

Instructions

1. 
   Emperor Penguins

   Look at the size of the penguin. Emperor Penguins are the largest of the penguin species. They have a short thick neck, and a big head. Emperor Penguins can weigh 88 pounds and are up to 40 inches tall.

2. 
   Color

   Look at the color of the penguin. Emperor Penguins have yellow ear patches, pale yellow on their upper breast, blackish blue heads and blue gray underparts.

3. 
   Habitat

   Look at where the penguins live. Emperor Penguins live in Antarctica. They are found in the Ross Sea, Weddell Sea, Dronning Maud Lands and Princess Elizabeth Land.

4. 
   Diving For Food

   Look at what the penguin eats. Emperor Penguins eat fish, squid and crustaceans. Other penguins live on surface krill. They can stay underwater for 18 minutes. They can also dive deeper than any other bird at 700 feet.
