How to be helpful to the elderly.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Compassion!!
  1. Step 1

First thing I do is make sure they have heat. We live in the Colorado mountains. Very cold!! If they dont I call my husband. That is his specialty. He is awsome!!! I can handle the rest on my own.

  2. Step 2

The next thing is food. I make sure they have enough to make it to my next visit. Also make sure they are able to prepare it on their own. If not I come back twice a day until they are. Have to keep up their strength. Next thing is cleanliness. For them and their home. I touch up what needs it, without invading their space. Space is important!

  3. Step 3

Next is medication. If they are running low I will call them in to the pharmacy. and sometimes I will count to make sure they are taking it correctly. Just a precaution. I will pick up prescriptions and groceries at the same time because we live about 40 miles from the closest store. I dont charge anything for helping. It just makes me feel good doing it. Sometimes they will ride along to town. Its great!!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you ever get the opportunity to do something for someone elderly do it. It is most gratifying. What really makes it awsome is they appreciate it. Its what I live for!!!
  • No warnings, Its all good!!!!

on 5/1/2009 Good tips for being kind to elderly folks and nice of you to write this. A few to add: (1) recycle your magazines (recent or current) and offer them to the senior to read. Many times they dont have $ for throw-away reading. (2) bake for them. Who doesn't like a surprise plate of homemade baked goods? (3) bring them a few fresh flowers from the grocery store, to brighten a corner or spot of their home. (4) Pray for their well-being. It can't hurt ;-)
