Step 1
Research your target client/customer and write a business plan.
You'll need it if you want to open a checking or credit account for your business. Go to the sba or score for help with the basics (see resources). -
Step 2
Keep records of business purchases, payments and invoices.
Quickbooks will let you download their Simple Start Free Edition (http://quickbooks.intuit.com/qb/products/common/direct_download/email.jsp?skuId=sku0000000000006360519). It's good for up to 20 customers. Check out a few of their other programs. -
Step 3
Print your business products for free or cheap.
The most famous for the best quality is Vistaprint (see resources). -
Step 4
Promote yourself.
Advertise your business in your email signature. Tell friends and family what you do so they can recommend you to friends and acquaintances. Offer to speak to small groups if applicable. Give advice when appropriate and goodies with your business name to targeted groups. -
Step 5
Invest in your business every day by learning and doing something for it. Keep plugging along, even in these hard financial times.
