How to Get Rid of a Dog's Fleas in a Yard

Sand fleas are the type of fleas you find in the yard and on your dog. There are a few things you can do to get rid of fleas in a yard and on your dog. Contrary to belief, the dog doesn't bring the fleas---they thrive in the yard, especially a yard with a lot of sandy soil, and they hop a ride on dogs and other pets. Once fleas get on your dog, the fleas are brought into the house where they get onto humans, in the carpet, on the furniture and wherever your pets are allowed in the house. Adult fleas live 30 to 40 days, and the adult stage is the only stage that sucks blood. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Mow the lawn and make sure the weeds along fences and buildings are cut down. Rake up all grass clippings and leaves and discard. Use large plastic bags to bag up the debris for the dump.

    • 2

Allow the yard to dry completely if there is dew or if it has rained. Many chemicals will become diluted if mixed with water, and will not be strong enough to kill fleas. For chemical treatment, go to Step 3. For nonchemical treatment, skip to Step 4.

    • 3

Spray the yard with insecticides that advertise flea eradication. Make sure you spray the entire yard, paying particular attention to dense shrubs and bushes and foundations of buildings. If you use chemicals, make sure you read the label and keep pets inside according to the label recommendations on the brand of chemical you are using.

    • 4

Dust the entire yard with diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth is crushed shell matter of diatoms. While diatomaceous earth looks like dust to humans, its fine, sharp edges are deadly to fleas, worms and other small vermin that bother dogs and other animals.

    • 5

Treat the dog with a veterinarian-prescribed flea medication such as K9 Advantix. Before treating, make sure the dog's hair is clean. If you must give him a bath, wash him before applying the chemicals. You can also rub diatomaceous earth into the dog's hair. Make sure you purchase "food grade" diatomaceous earth, not the stuff for pools. If you do not treat the dog, when the dog goes outside, it will reinfest the yard.

    • 6

Treat the inside of your home, including furniture, carpets and dog beds with diatomaceous earth. If the infestation is not cleared from the home, the fleas will jump on the dog and will be carried out into the yard.
