Step 1
Get a good grip and address the ball. Heels should be shoulder width apart. Bend forward at the hips, and slightly flex the knees. Adjust into a balanced stance with weight evenly distributed on both feet. Keep the front of both feet perpendicular to the target line.
-
Step 2
Start the backswing while at the same time shifting weight from the left foot to the right. Raise the club slowly over the right shoulder and flex the left hip.
-
Step 3
Keep both eyes on the ball and sweep through it with a rounded arc on the downswing. Make solid contact with the ball. When using a long iron, do not try to lift the ball but rather swing the club level through it. The shot should not be too fat or too flat.
-
Step 4
Transfer weight to the left foot and follow through in an upright balanced position. With a good follow-through, the finish will have the player facing the pin with the club over the left shoulder.
-
Step 5
Use proper technique on every swing. Try altering the stance or the arc of the downswing. Practice, practice, practice. When used correctly, the long iron is a great club that will get you on the fairway every time. Well, almost every time. After all, golf is golf.
