Many golf aficionados claim that using a long iron well is the most difficult thing to do on the greens. A good swing with the long iron is the result of plenty of practice. Instead of fairway woods, long irons are used for approach shots to get on the green. Once on the green, you use short irons to target the pin and putters to finish the hole. A high long shot with a beautiful soft drop is the goal of the duffer with long irons. The long shaft adds power and momentum to the swing. Only woods have longer shafts than long irons.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get a good grip and address the ball. Heels should be shoulder width apart. Bend forward at the hips, and slightly flex the knees. Adjust into a balanced stance with weight evenly distributed on both feet. Keep the front of both feet perpendicular to the target line.

  2. Step 2

Start the backswing while at the same time shifting weight from the left foot to the right. Raise the club slowly over the right shoulder and flex the left hip.

  3. Step 3

Keep both eyes on the ball and sweep through it with a rounded arc on the downswing. Make solid contact with the ball. When using a long iron, do not try to lift the ball but rather swing the club level through it. The shot should not be too fat or too flat.

  4. Step 4

Transfer weight to the left foot and follow through in an upright balanced position. With a good follow-through, the finish will have the player facing the pin with the club over the left shoulder.

  5. Step 5

Use proper technique on every swing. Try altering the stance or the arc of the downswing. Practice, practice, practice. When used correctly, the long iron is a great club that will get you on the fairway every time. Well, almost every time. After all, golf is golf.
