How to Become a Model in India

India has quite a large market for modeling and acting ventures. India's version of Hollywood, known as Bollywood, produces thousands of movies a year, which warrants the employment of professional models in addition to actors and actresses. There are also plenty of runway and editorial opportunities for Indian models, particularly with the launch of fashion magazines like Vogue India and the emergence of Indian fashion designers.

• Two photos of yourself: a close-up and a body shot

1. 

   Decide what type of model you want to become. India has a large market for a variety of modeling jobs, not just high-fashion modeling. There are also markets for teen modeling, body parts modeling and commercial modeling. Commercial modeling is more accepting of models who come in all shapes and sizes, and not necessarily only very thin and tall ones. Once you decide what you are best suited for, you can narrow down where and how to apply.

2. 

   Have some photographs taken to send to various agencies in India. The photographs don't have to be professional, but they have to give an accurate portrayal of what you look like. Make sure to send at least one close-up of your face and one full body shot. If you are considering body parts modeling (i.e. hands and feet) take photos of the body parts you think are best suited for modeling.

3. Get representation. Since India does not have many accredited modeling coordinators, your best bet is to submit your photos to Elite Model Management in India. Elite Models India is the premier modeling agency in the country. It is an accredited agency that won't try to rip you off or take advantage of you.

4. Upload your photos to the Elite Models India website or email them to this address: [e-mail]. 5. Go to as many castings and "go-sees" as possible. A go-see is like a short interview in which the model meets with a client who then decides if the model is suited for the job. It is often helpful to go to castings and meet recruiters, agents and clients in person.

Tips & Warnings

• Take good care of your skin, hair and body. Make sure you are dressed professionally when you go to castings and go-sees. Dress as you would for a job interview. Always wear a bikini underneath your clothes when going to a casting. Most casting directors will want to take a closer look at your body to determine if you are the right fit for their product or brand.

• Don't ever sign with an agency that asks for money. No respectable agency will ever ask you to pay for photos or a test shoot.
