How to Buy Tefillin

There are many considerations when purchasing Tefillin. Tefillin are holy objects that observant Jewish men wear during morning prayers. (In some more liberal Jewish communities, women also choose to wear Tefillin.) Tefillin are leather boxes that are strapped around the head and onto one hand. These boxes contain holy prayer scrolls. After finding a place to buy Tefillin, the customer must determine which of the various types of Tefillin are the best for him personally.

Determine whether you want Ashkenazi or Sephardi Tefillin. If you are of European or Russian descent, you most likely will want Ashkenazi Tefillin. Jews of Hispanic, Spanish or Italian descent are Sephardic, and may prefer Sephardic Tefillin. If you are unsure whether you want Ashkenazi or Sephardi Tefillin, consult your Rabbi.

Tefillin come in different grades. Consider the thickness of the leather when selecting Tefillin; thicker is more desirable. The entire box and straps being made of one, continuous piece of leather is considered better than pieces of leather stitched together. Make sure the scrolls to go in your Tefillin boxes are kosher. And remember that Tefillin boxes come in different sizes, so it is best to try them on before you decide on your purchase.

If you live in or near a Jewish neighborhood, it should be relatively easy to find a shop that sells Tefillin. Check in any store that sells Jewish books or has any other Judaica on display or for sale. Many synagogues have gift shops, and you may be able to find Tefillin there. Don't by shy about asking the local Rabbi where the best place to buy Tefillin is. Ask the Rabbi for advice not only on where to buy Tefillin, but what considerations he thinks are important in choosing Tefillin.

You can purchase Tefillin online, but it is the least advisable way to do so. It is best to purchase Tefillin after trying it on. Make sure the box sizes are comfortable and the feel of the leather is smooth on your skin. Tefillin must be comfortable and should not distract the wearer from his prayers by being itchy or uncomfortable.
