How to Prevent the Greenhouse Effect

The greenhouse effect is a hotly debated topic, but the reality of it is clear. Over the past 150 years, the temperature has been on a steady rise. What can't be disputed is the fact that it is grounded in climate science and research. If the greenhouse effect isn't stopped, there could be catastrophic results, including detrimental changes in weather and the rise of sea level. However, it is the control of all of the citizens of the earth to choose to do something about it.

Instructions

    • 1

Stop wasteful buying. If you don't need or truly want something, don't buy it. It's going to end up in the garbage. While you may not be able to stop reproduction in poor countries (a much more complicated and much needed endeavor), you can very much slow your own consumption. This can help towards stopping the greenhouse effect.

    • 2

Turn off the lights when you leave the room. Don't leave your television on while you go to sleep. Only turn on water when you need it. For example, turn it off while you are putting toothpaste on the toothbrush. Turn it back on when you need it.

    • 3

Reduce, reuse and recycle. Those are the three "R's," which are quite popular. Reduce the things that you need. Reuse items that you have until they are no longer any good. Recycle all that is possible. In certain areas, not recycling is starting to become illegal. Whether or not the law dictates it, a good conscience should. As an added bonus, many places offer cash in exchange for recycling bottles and cans.

    • 4

Choose natural gas over coal and oil every chance you get.

    • 5

Get a hybrid or an electric car when shopping for that new car. If this isn't possible, choose a small car that gets good gas mileage. This can go a long way to making the planet better.

    • 6

Form an environmental club in your high school, college or community. Even younger kids can get involved. It is never too early to start recycling.

    • 7

Walk to places in your neighborhood...or get there by bike. It will improve your health and the health of your planet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Olivia Newton-John's album "Warm and Tender" (1989) included a list of 10 things you can do to help the planet. Since then, a great deal of strides have been made for the environment, but the problem is still as important as it was then. It is important to do all you can as well to raise awareness.

  • Don't preach to your uninterested friends. The best way to make a difference is to set a positive, fun example. Remaining positive--never preachy--will encourage others to jump on the bandwagon.
