Wine has been documented as being a part of society for about 4,500 years. Even the Bible speaks of it, and it appears in ancient Egyptian writings. Today, red wine is known to complement and enhance the flavors of food, and it enjoys worldwide popularity.
Red wine also has the notorious reputation of staining our clothing so badly that the garments often must be discarded. But if you spill it on your jeans, the odds are in your favor. Red wine stains can usually be eliminated by these home remedies, using items that you probably already have in your home. Just remember that the key to effectively removing a red wine stain from your jeans is to act quickly.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clean damp cloth White wine White vinegar Club soda Mild dish soap Peroxide Baking soda
  1. Step 1

Blot the stain with a clean damp cloth until you can't lift any more of the wine with it. Don't rub it. Rubbing will only spread the stain and make it that much worse. The fibers of your jeans can be weakened by rubbing, resulting in frays and tears.

  2. Step 2

Immediately pour white wine over the red wine stain. Red wine is neutralized by white wine, which will make the stain disappear. You can simply throw the jeans in with your next load of laundry once the stain has been neutralized in this manner.

  3. Step 3

Saturate the wine stain with club soda, which should lift it out. If not, blot it gently with more club soda. When the red wine stain is lifted, blot it with a clean cloth dampened with cool water. Then just launder it as you normally would.

  4. Step 4

Dampen a clean cloth with white vinegar and blot the red wine stain until it is completely lifted from the jeans. If you need to, you can then pour the white vinegar directly onto the stain and then blot it. Blot with a clean cloth dampened with cool water. Then just launder the jeans as you usually do.

  5. Step 5

Mix 1 part mild dish soap with 2 parts of peroxide. Saturate the red wine stain thoroughly with this solution. Let the jeans presoak overnight, and launder them in cold water. Don't put the jeans in the dryer yet, though, as you'll probably need to repeat the presoak procedure. The second application should completely remove the stain.

  6. Step 6

Cover the stain with a sprinkling of baking soda. Let it sit until the wine is absorbed, and then just wipe it off. Blot the area with a cloth dampened with cool water.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never put a stained garment in the dryer because the heat will set the stain permanently. Never iron a stain.
