Use the Functional Keys on Computer Keyboard

Have you ever noticed the row of keys that are typically directly above the numbers on your keyboard? The keys, starting with "F1" and ending with "F12," are called "Function Keys." You may have even been afraid to touch them for fear of what they might do. Function keys can be programmed to perform special tasks. If you are using a Windows PC, they are probably pre-programmed for you. Learn how this special row of keys can make your life a little easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Get help. The "F1" key will bring up the "Windows" help screen if you are viewing your desktop or browsing the Internet. If you have another program open, such as a Microsoft Office application, pressing "F1" will open that program's help window.

    • 2

Find what you are looking for. Pressing "F3" while viewing the desktop will open your system's "Find Files" window. If you are viewing a Web page, pressing "F3" will let you search the page for a word or phrase.

    • 3

Refresh your view. If you have just deleted a file or folder but it is still showing, try pressing "F5." Using this key will refresh the page. This key works well in Internet Explorer as well. For example, if you are watching an auction you bid on, pressing "F5" will refresh the page and show you any updates.

Check out the menu. Pressing "F10" will take you to the first item on the menu or toolbar of most windows. For example, if you are browsing the Web in Internet Explorer or working on a Word document, pressing "F10" will activate "File" on the toolbar. Use the arrow keys to navigate to other areas on the toolbar or in that menu.

    • 5

Get rid of the toolbar and the taskbar. Pressing "F11" will open the active window to full screen, hiding the taskbar and toolbar. This one often causes people to panic when the accidentally hit it and cannot figure out a way to restore or even close the window. Pressing "F11" again will return the window to its original state.
