Instructions

1
Assume ready position, as you would at the net. The hands are up and extended rather than down, as they are at the baseline.
-
2
Extend the arms out in front of you, keeping the racquethead below eye level (at chin height).
-
-
3
Be on your toes, and ready to split step.
-
4
Take your split step as your opponent makes contact with the ball.
-
5
Lay your wrist back so that the palm is facing toward your target area (your palm dictates the racquetface direction).
-
6
Step in with your left foot (for right handers) as you make contact with the ball.
-
7
Keep your hand, wrist and arm firm during contact.
-
8
Block or punch the shot, using very little racquet motion. Since the ball is coming much quicker, a swinging or waving motion is rarely needed.

Tips & Warnings
Practice either close to the net with your partner by keeping the ball up in the air. This will quicken your reflexes and develop good volley technique.
Practice off the wall, approximately eight feet. Keep the ball up on the wall (i.e. don't let it bounce).
