How to Get Rid of a Rash on a Dog

For many reasons a dog may develop a rash under its fur that will cause them to scratch constantly. This can be dangerous if the dog continuously scratches itself uncontrollably and damages its skin or body. It's much easier and cheaper to treat a rash than bring a dog into the vet for a self-inflicted wound. We are often accustomed to treating our own medical conditions when they arise, but we often don't realize that a dog is like a child and must be cared for in a similar manner. It's the job of the pet owner to remove any rashes from dogs, so the dogs will be healthy and happy again.

    Things You'll Need

    • Dog funnel
    • Canine skin cream
    • Razor
    • Shaving cream
    • Rag
      • 1

Calm the dog, so it knows it's not in danger. Apply shaving cream to the area of the rash.

      • 2

Use a razor to remove the fur from the area of the rash. Be careful not to cut the skin of the dog, as the skin is tender from the rash. The dog may kick or try to bite at the area.

      • 3

Use a clean wet rag to wipe off the rash before applying the treatment.

      • 4

Apply the skin ointment to the affected area. Make an even coat making sure not to put too much on the skin. In many cases you may cause further irritation if you use too much ointment.

      • 5

Put the funnel around the neck of the dog to keep it from licking and biting at the affected area.

      • 6

Watch the dog carefully for a few days. It's likely that it will try to rub the rash with a chair leg or the wall, since it is unable to reach it with its face.
