How to Clean Salt Off Windows

Winter weather can be rough on you car exterior. The salt not only damages your cars paint job, but it also covers your windows making it nearly impossible to see. Running your car through a car wash will clean your car, but the windows need extra maintenance to remove the salt and ensure highest visibility.

Things You'll Need

• Ammonia
• Vinegar
• Warm water
• Spray bottle
• Lint free towels
• Toothbrush
• Rain-X glass treatment

Instructions

1. Mix a window cleaner consisting of 4 tbsp. of ammonia, 2 tbsp. of vinegar, and 1 quart of warm water in a spray bottle.

2. Lift up your windshield wipers so that you have full access to the front windshield.

3. Spray the homemade cleaner on a lint-free cloth. Using this cloth, wash the front windshield in a circular motion. Follow immediately with a dry cloth to remove all traces of the cleaner.

4. Spray another lint-free cloth with homemade cleaner. Rub down the edges of the windshield wipers to remove salt buildup.

5. Spray a toothbrush and clean the edges around your windshield. Using a dry cloth immediately wipe away any dirt the toothbrush brings up.

6. Repeat these steps working your way around all of your car windows. Wash the interior of your windows in the same manner.

7. Spray Rain-X glass treatment on the front windshield and wipe away. This will protect your windshield from further salt accumulation. Repeat this step on the rest of your exterior windows.

Tips & Warnings

• This will take time but it is important to wash the interior and the exterior of your cars windows. Replace windshield wipers at least once a year. When working on the interior you may want to lay newspaper down to avoid cleaner getting on your upholstery. Always spray the cleaner on the cloth.

• Spraying the cleaner directly on the windshield can cause the cleaner to drip onto your upholstery or the car's paint.
