Instructions

    • 1

Choose which size decorative pillow you will make. There is no rule about how large or how small a pillow should be other than it should fit the size of bed or sofa it will be on. They may be square, rectangular, circular, heart shaped or any other shape you choose. For the purposes of these instructions we will sew a 16-inch pillow.

    • 2

Cut out two 17-inch square pieces of fabric. This will allow for a ½-inch seam allowance on all four sides. Pin the two pieces of fabric, right sides together, all around the edges. Sew a ½-inch seam around the decorative pillow pieces, leaving a 5-inch opening on one side. Clip the corners to about ¼ inch from the seam.

    • 3

Turn the pillow right side out. Make sure to poke out the corners with your finger so they make a soft point. Fill the decorative pillow with polyester fiber filling. Fold the opening under to match the ½-inch seam on both sides. Pin it and then hand sew the opening shut. You have completed your first decorative pillow.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have chosen a fabric that may shrink, wash and dry the fabric before starting the process. Later, these pillows can be thrown into the washing machine for cleaning and you don't want them to shrink unevenly at that time.
