1
Measure the window. Using the tape, measure the outside width dimensions of the window. This measurement will be necessary to purchase a decorative rod or pole and to know the length needed for a window scarf. Rods come in adjustable sizes, so choose a rod that adjusts longer than the width measurement of the window. For the scarf, choose a length that is 2 to 4 times the width of the window.

2
Hang the drapery rod, drapery pole or scarf holders. Measure at least 2 inches above the window and 3 inches past the window molding for the rod mounts or holders. Mark the area and using a screw gun, attach the mounts to the wall. Use wall anchors for a more secure placement. If the window is wide and you are using a decorative pole, secure a support bracket in the center of the window aligned with the outside mounts.

Lay the window scarf on the floor. Begin to pleat or fold the scarf lengthwise. Pin or clip the center of the scarf and the corner locations. This helps keep the scarf folded and gives you a starting point for hanging the scarf.

4
Drape the scarf onto the curtain rod or through the scarf holders. Center the scarf using the fabric pins or binder clips as a guide. Remove the pins or clips. Pull on the pleats in the center of the scarf to create a swag or drape. Adjust the sides, so they are even.

Tips & Warnings
Hang the scarf, so it is asymmetrical for a dramatic look. Look for interesting decorative poles, sconces or scarf holders to create a focal point in the room. Use a laser level to guarantee the curtain mounts or scarf holders are even on each side of the window.
Avoid using safety pins to hold the pleats. They will put holes in the fabric.
