Instructions

Massage the scar. Use firm pressure and circular motions to rub the scar for at least two minutes. Do this three or four times throughout the day. Massage helps to break up thick scar tissue and increases circulation, thereby allowing needed nutrients to more readily reach the area.

    • 2

Apply scar treatment ointment. Available in most drug stores and pharmacies, scar treatment ointments contain natural ingredients like onion extract which break down scars. You'll need to apply the ointment three times daily for at least two months before you see improvements in the scar.

Get laser treatments. Lasers have been shown to be the most effective means of treating thick scars. The intense laser light penetrates thick scar tissue, breaking up so it is then absorbed by the body's immune system. The light also stimulates collagen production so the area will look firmer and younger after treatment. Generally, repeated sessions are necessary to remove thick scars.

Consume a healthy diet. Proper nutrition is imperative in order for the skin to heal properly. Eat fresh foods often, particularly ones that are rich in zinc, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. When you nourish your body well, your skin will be better equipped to heal from scarring.

    • 5

Try microdermabrasion treatments. During sessions, a small machine will be used to buff away your top layers of skin. As a result, your scar tissue will be buffed down and broken up, helping to eliminate your thick scars. You'll likely need several treatments, spread over a few months, to get rid of your scars.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get cardiovascular exercise regularly. Exercise increases circulation which aids in skin's recovery.

  • Never squeeze or pick at your scars. It will only worsen them.
