Things You'll Need:
- Beads
- Egyptian coins
- Jump rings
- Jewelry pliers
- Scarf
- Crochet needle
- Embroidery needle
- Yarn or embroidery floss
- Sewing machine
-
Step 1
Take the scarf and either serge or do a zigzag stitch around the hemline. Do this two or three times. This will add the texture needed when you add the fringe to the scarf. It will also help in stabilizing the weight of the scarf when it's completed.
-
Step 2
Crochet 10 triangles or four 30-inch rows of chain crochet that is at least five rows in width. While doing this, insert beads throughout the process of creating the triangles or rows of chain crochet. Insert a bead or two every 2 to 5 inches. This will create the Egyptian fringe look that most belly dance scarves have.
-
Step 3
Using the jewelry pliers, insert the jump rings onto the Egyptian coins, and set them aside. Leave some extra coins without jump rings to place onto the scarf for later usage, should some fall off. Close the jump rings once you insert them into each coin so they do not fall off.
-
Step 4
Using the crochet needle, crochet the Egyptian coins onto the bottom hemline of each triangle or row of chain fringe. Do this by running the needle through each jump ring as you crochet another row onto the hemline. You can add rows of Egyptian coins by adding them to a crochet chain, and then hand-sewing it onto the triangles or rows of chain.
-
Step 5
Attach the triangles/rows of chain to the scarf by either machine sewing with a zigzag stitch or hand-sewing directly onto the fabric. If you have a sewing machine, it is better to machine sew to ensure the chain is sewn securely. Using a beading needle, hand-sew rows of beads directly above each row of chain fringe or above each triangle. Check the scarf for any loose coins or beads, and ensure everything is sewn onto the fabric securely.
