How to Clean Plastic Shutters

Plastic shutters are an easy and inexpensive way to add architectural detail and interest to your home. Because they are a solid color all the way through, they will not chip like a wooden painted shutter might. However, just like anything else on the exterior of your home, plastic shutters can become soiled from rain, snow, bugs and other harsh elements. In addition, if the shutter is a dark color, the vibrancy can fade and oxidize over time. Regular cleaning and maintenance is the best way to keep plastic shutters looking clean and fresh. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew shutters and remove from house.

    • 2

Use hose with a spray nozzle to remove any large chunks of dirt, bugs, cobwebs or other stuck-on debris.

    • 3

Mix water and mild detergent in a bucket. Dip a soft cloth into the detergent mixture and wipe each slat of the shutter clean. If there are crevices you are unable to reach with the cloth, use a toothbrush.

    • 4

Dry the shutter with a towel, or place in a warm sunny location to air out.

    • 5

Spray Armor All or automotive wax onto a soft clean cloth. Wipe each slat of the shutter with the cloth. This will help remove oxidation from the plastic, bring out the shine and protect the shutter surface.

Tips & Warnings

  • If, after cleaning, the shutter does not appear as clean as you were hoping, consider covering the shutter with a thick urethane-based paint. Use a cotton swab to apply wax into hard-to-reach crevices of the shutter.

  • Do not clean with harsh abrasives such as scouring pads or kitchen cleanser. This will permanently mark the surface of the shutter.
