How to Clean Whirlpool Bath Tubs
Properly cleaning a whirlpool tub is necessary to prevent infections and keep it running in good condition. Build-up from oils on your body, bath products, shampoo, and soap are normal, but can also encourage bacterial growth and accumulate until they clog your whirlpool system. Special cleaning products are available from your whirlpool distributor, or you can follow these steps about once a month, depending on how often you use it, to maintain your whirlpool tub. Things You'll Need
- Bleach (1/2 cup)
- Powdered dishwashing detergent (2 tbsp.)
- White vinegar (1/2 gallon)

Fill your tub with hot water until the jets are fully immersed. Turn off the air induction (the control that determines how bubbly the jet water is). Add 1/2 cup of regular household bleach and 2 tbsp. powdered dishwasher detergent.

Turn the jets on, and step back to make sure you don't get splashed by bleach. Let the whirlpool jets run for 15 to 20 minutes.

Drain the water. Fill the tub up again, this time with cold water, and let run for another 15 minutes. Drain, and repeat the flush with cold water once more.

The tub portion can be cleaned with a gel or liquid cleanser, appropriate to the material of the tub. Check the directions on the cleaning agent, and perform a spot test to make sure it won't damage the tub. Wait at least 2 hours before using the tub.

If you are looking for a more ecologically friendly solution, or would prefer not to use bleach, perform a 15 minute flush with hot water and 1/2 gallon white vinegar. You do not need to follow the vinegar flush with a cold water flush, but wait at least two hours before using the whirlpool.

Tips & Warnings
Use the tub only for relaxation, not for regular cleaning. Soaps, bath bubbles, shampoos, and other personal hygiene products will cause build-up faster. Take a shower before you use the tub--it will help remove body oils. After bathing, flush the system with clean water.
Do not run the jets if they are not fully immersed in water, it may damage you whirlpool. Always be careful when using bleach. Do not let it splash in your eyes, and do not mix it with any cleaning product containing ammonia.
