Windows Vista is a computer operating system released by the Microsoft Corporation. Designed to be the successor to Windows XP, Vista is characterized by a more memory intensive user interface, with more visual bells and whistles. While some users appreciate Vista's new look, others have decried Vista as being too buggy, needlessly showy, and less user friendly than Windows XP. One common problem a Vista novice might have is accidentally deleting the recycle bin from the desktop when attempting to empty it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the personalize menu from the desktop. To do this, right click on your desktop to bring up a pull down menu, and select the personalize option at the bottom of the list. You can also access the personalization menu from the control panel.

  2. Step 2

Select "Change Desktop Icons," from the menu at the top left of the personalize screen, under "Tasks."

  3. Step 3

Check the box for recycle bin under desktop icons. By deleting the recycle bin, this box should have become unchecked. By rechecking the box, it will restore the recycle bin on the desktop.

  4. Step 4

Click "Apply" at the bottom of the "Change Desktop Icons" window, then click "OK" and shut your open windows. The recycle bin should be back in its proper place.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is possible to disable the delete option on the recycle bin to prevent you from accidentally removing it. Another way to avoid hitting the "Delete" key, is to double click the "Recycle Bin," and delete its contents from the recycle bin menu instead of right clicking the bin.
