Measure the window, width and height. Also measure the circumference of your curtain rod (you will need two). Both tiers should be twice the width of your window. The length should be half the window height plus curtain rod circumference plus 6 inches to allow for curtain rod easement, hem and overhang. You are now ready to purchase your fabric and matching thread. Don't forget you need two panels.

Check to see if the salvage at both sides of your fabric is acceptable. If it's frayed or contains printing, you will need to sew a ¼-inch hem on each side. Do this by pressing under ¼ inch, wrong sides together, and then pressing another ¼ inch. Stitch on your sewing machine close to the inside fold.

    • 3

Fold under ¼ inch, wrong sides together, at the top of each tier curtain panel. Fold down again the measurement that was our curtain rod circumference plus 1 inch. For example, if the circumference of your curtain rod is 1½ inches, your total fold over measurement would be 2½ inches. Press the fold and pin it in place. Sew across, close to the inside fold.

Hem your two tiered curtain panels by folding under ¼ inch and press. Fold again at 1 inch and press. Pin the hem and sew across, on your sewing machine, close to the inside fold. Cut all stray threads and press your tier curtains.

Hang your top curtain rod just over the top of the window and thread the top curtain panel onto the rod. Place the bottom curtain panel onto the second rod and have someone hold it under the first hung curtain while you stand back and eye the best spot for the rod to be hung. This should be 3 to 5 inches under the bottom of the first curtain. Hang the second curtain.
