Cite a Web Page With MLA Style

The Modern Language Association's style guide is mainly used to document writing in literature and language. MLA style is generally simpler than other style guides. Citations for web pages and articles on the Internet use a standard form.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite an article on the Internet by listing author, title and the publication the article appeared in. Use the title first if there is no author.

    • 2

Add the full date of the article, the number of pages in the article, the name of the database you found the article in and the company that created the database, for instance Lexis-Nexis. Underline the name of the database.

    • 3

Include the place you accessed the database if it was a library or similar research facility.

    • 4

Place the URL of the article at the end of the citation. Bracket the URL by using < at the beginning and > at the end. Shorten very long URLs by only using the URL for the home page.

    • 5

Cite the information for an entire website in this order: Title of the page, the name of the website and the company that created the website.

    • 6

Add the date the site was created (if you can) and the date you accessed the site. Place the web page's URL at the end of the citation. Bracket the URL and shorten very long URLs.

    • 7

Double space the entire citation, and indent the lines following the first line. Put a period at the end of the citation.

Tips & Warnings

  • Alphabetize a list of citations by author. Abbreviate the names of months, except for May, June and July.
