After you read this article you are guaranteed to do better on that next sit n' go tournament you play in.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • patience
  • more patience
  1. Step 1

For the first few rounds of play, don't play anything except AA, KK, AK, maybe AQ if it is suited. Save your chips for big hands so you can double up. You can go much further than you would think if you double up on the hands that you do play.

  2. Step 2

Once the blinds start getting bigger, you can start playing more. Ace with anything suited is nice, suited connectors (ex. 67s, QKs), and lower pairs.

  3. Step 3

After the flop comes (the first three cards on the board), don't push your luck if nothing comes, get out! It doesn't matter how much money if you have in the pot, giving away more chips won't help.

  4. Step 4

After the flop comes and you have a draw (one card short of a desired hand), there is a simple way to get an estimate of your chances of hitting that draw.

First, count all the possible cards that can fill your draw. These are called outs.

ex. If I am one card short of a flush then I have 9 outs.
13 cards of each suite - 4 cards in my draw = 9 other cards that could fill the draw.

Now, if there are two more cards to see, multiply your outs by 4
If there is one card to see, multiply your outs by 2

This will give you a rough percentage chance of hitting your draw.
ex. Flush draw with two cards to see
13 cards of each suit - 4 in draw =9 outs
    9 outs x 4 = 36% chance of hitting flush

I don't hit my flush and there is one card to see
    9 outs x 2 = 18% chance of hitting flush

  5. Step 5

The next step is to resist betting a larger percentage of the pot than your chances of hitting your hand that you think will win.

if you have an 18% chance of hitting a flush, and you think you're flush will win, don't bet more than 18% of the pot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Beware of possible flushes, straights and other dangerous hands your opponent could have.
  • If there is a pair on the board they could have three of a kind or even a full house
  • If there are three cards of the same suite, they could have a flush
  • If there are three cards within 4 spaces of each other, they could have a straight.
  • DO NOT overplay, you can win with fewer hands than you think.
  • People will knock themselves out if you're patient.
