Steps to Use a Fire Extinguisher
It is imperative that every building should not only keep a fully functional fire extinguisher handy, but have occupants who know how to use it. There are four main types of fire extinguisher, which are coded by letter. It is very important to know which type you have so you don't use the wrong type on the wrong kind of fire. Water extinguishers should not be used on grease, electrical or combustible metals. Dry chemical extinguishers tend to be better for multipurpose fire use. Fire extinguishers should be inspected at least once a month, so you are always ready for an emergency. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Know your fire extinguisher. Check to see that the type you own matches the contents and usage of the building it will be used for. If for instance you operate a chemical laboratory, you will need to be sure you have a Class D extinguisher that can combat combustible metals and other materials not commonly used in a household fire. A good choice of extinguisher for most buildings is a multipurpose dry chemical ABC extinguisher. This type of extinguisher can be used on grease, gasoline and electrical fires in addition to ordinary combustibles such as paper.

2
Determine a clear path out of the building, should you need to evacuate, before you begin to use the extinguisher.
-
-
3
Use the P.A.S.S. technique to operate the extinguisher. Most extinguishers operate in this same fashion. P= Pull. A= Aim. S=Squeeze. S= Sweep.
-
4
Pull the pin from the top of the extinguisher to release the tamper seal, activating the extinguisher.
-
5
Aim the nozzle or nose of the extinguisher toward the base or bottom of the fire. You want to attack the fire at the source. Remember, this is one time you want to aim low.
-
6
Squeeze the handle down toward the extinguisher. Depressing the handle releases the extinguishing element.
-
7
Sweep across the fire in a side to side motion until the fire appears to be out.
-
8
Watch the fire closely. If there seem to be any signs of the fire reigniting, simply repeat steps 5 through 7.
-
9
Make sure you maintain your fire extinguisher by checking it monthly to be sure it is charged, that the pin and tamper seal are intact and that the canister itself appears to be in good repair, free of dents, rust, leaks or other visible damage or issues. Always be sure that the extinguisher is in an easily visible and accessible area free of hindrances.
