How to Measure a Bicycle Tire
To identify the size of the tire on your bicycle, all you need to be aware of are the dimensions of the wheel before the tire is put on. This is a common mistake people make when checking their tire sizes. Bicyclists often include the wheel as part of the overall size and end up purchasing a tire that is too big for their wheel. Checking the size of the tire on your bicycle is a quick process.

1
Use a tape measure to measure the size of the tire while it is still on the wheel. Your measurement may be a bit off due to the tire being inflated below its recommended inflation.
-
2
Remove the tire. Take another measurement, this time of the wheel itself with no tire attached to it. This will be the actual size of your wheel and the size of replacement tire you should look for.
-
-
3
Measure the circumference of the tire. Be sure not to press the tire down when doing this, or there may be a distortion in the tire, which can lead to an inaccurate measurement.
-
4
Take the information you've gathered to you local bike store and seek a replacement bicycle tire. If you have this much information, the sales person should be able to find the appropriate tire you're looking for.
-
5
Remount the wheel with the tire. Be sure to include the tube of the tire when putting it back on. Check that it fits properly. When inflated, the tire should be tight against the wheel.
