How to Design a Game Room

Designing a game room may be one of the most enjoyable aspects of either planning a soon-to-be built house or determining how to use the space of a newly purchased home. Depending on how much space you will have available, you can put in such things as a poker table, pool table, dart board, arcade cabinet, foosball table and more. It is just a matter of what you want, what you can afford and where you can put it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what you want to put in the room and if your budget will allow it. A pool table is a game room staple, but good ones can run into the low thousands. Meanwhile, a good foosball table can generally be had for less than $1,000.

Budget your space. You will need a lot more room for a pool table than you would an arcade cabinet. You will need a lot of space for a poker table, but not very much for a foosball table. If you are building a home, first figure out what you want to put into the room and then you will know how big the room needs to be or if you are buying an existing home determine how much space you will have and plan the items in the game room around that.

    • 3

Plan the placement of electrical outlets in the room if you want to add electronics to your game room. Arcade and pinball games will need to be plugged in, as will electronic basketball Pop-A-Shot type games. If you also want to make the game room an entertainment room with a big screen TV, you will need to put the outlets in a place with enough room for the TV and a viewing area.

Use a dart board with a cabinet if you plan to hang a dart board. This will keep most errant throws from sticking into your wall, saving you a lot of spackle and repainting later.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider adding a bar area if you have the budget and space. Providing an area to have drinks and snacks is a good complement to the games in the room.

  • Do not buy pool tables with slatron tops. This is a play on the word "slate," which is the top you actually want. Slatron tops are actually a composite that contains wood and will begin to bow over the years.
