How to Fill a Zippo

Zippo lighters are not only cool, but using a Zippo lighter instead of a disposable plastic lighter cuts down on the landfill waste created by plastic lighters. If you've made the switch to a Zippo lighter and want to know how to fill it, you're in luck. Filling your Zippo lighter is moderately easy and can be done in just a few minutes. Grab your Zippo lighter, lighter fuel and some paper towels and you're set!

Things You'll Need

• Paper towels
• Latex gloves (optional)

Instructions

1. Hold your Zippo lighter case open with one hand. With the other pull the lighter insert straight up and out of its case.

2. Lift the felt piece on your Zippo lighter. Once you've lifted the felt piece, you will be able to see down into the packing material inside the fuel compartment.

3. Use specially formulated lighter fluid to saturate the packing material inside the Zippo lighter fuel compartment. Fill your Zippo lighter slowly and be careful not to fill it too full.

4. Reinsert the fuel compartment insert into the Zippo lighter case. The fuel compartment should slide easily back into its case.

5. Clean the outside of the Zippo lighter case with a paper towel to remove any excess lighter fluid on the outside of the case. Close and wipe the lighter fluid bottle with paper towels as well. Make sure that there is no spilled lighter fluid before using the lighter.

Tips & Warnings

• Wearing latex gloves while filling your Zippo lighter will protect you from irritation you may encounter if the lighter fluid comes into contact with your skin.

• Be very careful not to overfill your Zippo lighter. Always exercise caution when using flammable liquids.
