Instructions

  1. Sewing a Jean Pocket Coin Purse

    • 1

Remove two back pockets from a pair of jeans. Remove them using a seam ripper so that you don't accidentally damage the pocket itself. The pockets will need to be the same size so it is best to use two pockets from the same pair of pants.

    • 2

Sew one side of the zipper to the top backside of one pocket. Be sure to line up the closure end of the zipper with the corner of the pocket so you're able to zipper the purse closed when you're done.

    • 3

Sew the other side of the zipper to the top backside of the second pocket. Make sure you line up the two pockets before you sew second pocket to the zipper. If the pockets aren't lined up right the zipper won't operate properly.

    • 4

Separate the two pockets so that the backside of the pockets are showing. You'll have to hold them open since they'll be attached at the top by the zipper.

    • 5

Line the edge of the bottom pocket with fabric glue. Tuck in the ends of the zipper, line of the edges of the two pockets and firmly press them together. Hold the pockets together or place something heavy on top of them until the glue dries. Since denim is sometimes hard to sew, gluing them first will help hold the pockets in place.

    • 6

Sew around the bottom edge and the two sides of the denim pockets. Since you'll be sewing through two pieces of denim, it may be difficult. Try sewing just inside the edges of the pockets where the material is thinner.

    Without a Zipper

    • 7

If you don't want to use a zipper as a closure, you can also buy a large button and a thick elastic hair band.

    • 8

Sew the button onto the front side of the pocket.

    • 9

Loop the elastic hair band around the button, and fold it over the top of the coin purse. Extend the hair band as far as it will go down the other side of the coin purse.

    • 10

Sew the hair band to the back side of the coin purse. Be sure you sew it low enough so that when you loop the hair band around the button it is tight enough to hold the purse shut.
