How to Measure Heel Height in Dress Shoes
Sometimes when going out, women need to know what height their dress shoes are going to be. Perhaps they're wearing a nice dress or robe and they want to compare the length of the heels to the length of the dress to make sure there will be no dragging or tripping. Another reason for measuring your heel size is when you're shopping for business pants and don't want to wear the dress shoes of a similar height when you shop.

1
Measure the length and width of your foot as well as the height of your heel. These are helpful when shopping for dress shoes and high heels because every company measures heels a little differently.
-
2
Find a dress shoe that fits properly. Put the shoe on and put your foot on a flat surface like a wood floor in the position that it would be in when you're walking. Try not to bend your calf or put weight on the heel itself. This will make for an inaccurate measurement.

3
Measure the back of the heel. Start from the bottom of the heel and go up to the spot the heel meets the sole of your shoe. Round to the nearest half-inch. If you measure the heel to be 3 and 7/8 inches, that would be closest to four inches. Similarly, 3 and 3/8 inches are closest to 3 1/2 inches.
-
4
Measure the heel of the other shoe. It should come up to same height, with possibly 1/16 to 2/16 of a difference.
-
5
Measure both heels twice to make sure your measurement is accurate, especially if your measurements for both shoes were drastically different in Step 4. If you like, you may even want to take the shoes off and measure them to make sure you're getting the best measurements and numbers possible.

Tips & Warnings
When measuring the heel, it is easiest to do it with measuring tape. Take the metal piece of the beginning of the measuring tape and put it under the heel. This will start the measurement right at the base of the heel for a more accurate and correct number.
