Step 1
Download and install Spybot--Search and Destroy. The program is intended to be free, although some websites may try to charge users to download it. The best website to download it from is the official website (see Resources below).
-
Step 2
Open the program. A box should automatically pop up requesting an update. Run the update to install more virus definitions. The main menu showcases 3 options. The first is a picture of binoculars referring to a scan of your computer. The second is a recovery option to reverse any spyware you may have deleted. The third button is for updates, which the program typically does on its own.
-
Step 3
Click on the scan button to begin a scan of your computer. This process may take over an hour as it scans and looks for any potentially harmful files. A progress bar on the bottom of the screen will show the scan status and what spyware files the program is looking for.
-
Step 4
Remove the files once the scan has been completed. Most of the time every file should be removed from the computer, but if you are unsure about some, you can click once on them. Information will appear on the right side of the screen that describes what the virus or spyware is. If a Trojan horse is found, the program will automatically recognize it, and these files should be immediately removed.
-
Step 5
Wait for the files to be removed. In some cases the computer may need to be restarted to properly move the files. This should be done as soon as the program requests it. When the computer restarts it will load automatically, run a new scan and delete the files.
