The kitschy colors and accessories may seem slightly over the top. But for many people the kitchen will become a comfort zone with fond memories from the past. Use these tips and products that are readily available commercially to decorate a kitschy retro mode kitchen.

Install a vinyl or linoleum floor covering that has a strong geometric design. Use self-adhesive vinyl floor tiles to create a black and white checkerboard pattern.

  2. Step 2

Paint the walls with matte-finish paint in retro colors. Choose from 1950s shades of aqua, chartreuse green or pink. Paint the trim and mop-boards with the same color using a gloss-finish paint.

Remove the hardware from the cupboards and drawers. Paint the wood with white glossy paint. Replace hardware with curved handles and door pulls made of chrome or polished nickel.

  4. Step 4

Set in a white cast-iron single-bowl sink. Mount a two-handle chrome faucet at the back of the sink and place a chrome strainer in the sink drain.

Select Formica countertops and install only on the flat surfaces. Create a tile backsplash on each wall where it meets the countertop. Use white and retro color tiles that coordinate with the painted walls.

  6. Step 6

Avoid stainless-steel appliances. Choose white appliances with chrome handles and knobs. Accessorize the refrigerator with magnets, notes and photos.

Accessorize the kitschy retro mode kitchen with a ceramic clock and copper or tin Jell-O molds. Place a tray with a silver cocktail shaker and martini glasses on the counter. Position several salt and pepper shaker sets on the windowsill. Line up graduated-size enamel canisters on the countertop along the wall.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a chrome-leg kitchen table and chairs covered with vinyl instead of an island to complete the kitschy retro mode room design.
