How to Sew a Lampshade Cover

Updating a lamp does not always require purchasing a new shade. By making a lampshade cover, you can avoid the hassle of purchasing a new shade that may not fit properly.

Creating your own lampshade cover is economical because it can the made using very little fabric. Lampshade covers also allow you to be flexible in decorating style, color and season.

Things You'll Need

  • Fabric
  • Thread
  • Fusible adhesive tape
  • Coordinating 1/2-inch-wide ribbon
  • Hot glue gun (if needed)

Instructions

      Measure around the widest part of the shape. Multiply the measurement by 1 1/2 for the slip cover width.

      Measure the lampshade from the top to bottom and add three inches for the casing and hem.

      Pin the short ends together, right sides facing.

      Starting at the top, sew down 1 1/2 inches. Leave a 1-inch opening, then sew the remainder of the seam.

      At the top, press under 1/4 inch, then 1 1/4 inches to form a casing.

      Top stitch 1/4 inch from top folded edge. Then sew around the slipcover 1 1/4 inches from the top folded edge, catching the lower pressed edge and forming the bottom of the casing.

      Hem the bottom edge with fusible adhesive tape.

      Place the slipcover over the lampshade and tie the ribbon over the casing. Hot glue the ribbon in place if needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid using dark, heavy fabrics for a lampshade.
