How to Use a GE Self-Cleaning Oven
General Electric (GE) has taken the work out of oven cleaning in modern stoves. No longer do you need smelly and toxic oven cleaner spray. Now all you have to do is lock the oven and press a button. The self-cleaning feature of the oven will do the rest. Using the self cleaning option on your GE oven is best accomplished on a day when you can provide ventilation to your kitchen as the option emits high heat and some smells, depending on what foods are dripped inside. Remove the racks from the oven. Wash these with hot, soapy water. Use a plastic scrubby if needed to remove any grime build-up. Set the racks aside to dry.

Move the oven locking mechanism from the left side of the oven to the right. This will lock the oven door until the self-cleaning process is complete. The locking mechanism is located in a slot just beneath the stovetop and above the oven.

Press the Self-Clean button on the control panel of your stove. If your stove is an older model, you may have to turn the oven dial to the self-cleaning mark on the dial.

Allow the self-clean process to complete. This will start automatically once you press the button or set the dial.

Unlock the oven door when the process is complete. On some models, the stove will sound a chime much as it does when it has completed preheating. On older models, wait until the elements have returned to a "black" state and the door can be unlocked.

Use a damp sponge to remove any ash on the floor of the oven.

Replace the racks in the oven. The oven is now ready for regular use.

Tips & Warnings
Plan for this process to take an afternoon. You should never run the self-cleaning process unattended. Make sure the oven top is clear of any pots, pans or dishes. The vent from the oven could damage anything left on top.
Never force the oven lock open. This can easily damage the oven itself and any steam or heat inside could cause severe burns.

I've reset my oven after it cooled down and the door wouldn't unlock. It still won't unlock and I'm having family for Thanksgiving tomorrow! Hoping it will open okay in the morning so I can use the oven! Mine is an older oven and I don't have the manual anymore.

Ive had to reset the oven twice and just want to stop this and unlock the door.

This comment is late as well, but I just ran mine and had the same occur. I believe the oven gets sufficiently hot to ignite grease and other food particles and would not worry about it. My first question is, do you wait until the oven is entirely cooled off before wiping any ash and other residue or do you do it while the inside is still luke warm? Lastly, I do realise this process should clean the oven entirely, but if not, can you use regular oven cleaner? Someone told me it could possibly damage the coating that all self-cleaning ovens supposedly have. Thx

i know this is late, but maybe it means you had too much on the bottom of the oven interior? if it's an electric oven, i don't think it's supposed to have any flames like that.
