If you're a Pagan, witch or Wiccan, at some point you may wish to use a magic wand in ritual or spell work. The wand is one of the most popular magical tools in modern witchcraft. It is a phallic symbol often used to represent the masculine energy of the god in Wiccan ritual, and can be used to invoke deity, consecrate ritual space, or direct energy in magical workings. In many magical traditions, the wand is something that each practitioner should make themselves. Some people believe you should have a different wand for each type of magic that you do, but it's not necessary.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Branch from a fallen tree
  • Sandpaper or a sharp knife
  • Woodburning kit (optional)
  • Gems or crystals (optional)
  • Craft supplies (optional)
  1. Step 1

Find a tree branch that appeals to you. You may wish to look for a specific type of wood, based upon the properties of the tree. Oak is associated with strength and power, apple with love, pine for abundance, and so forth. Learn about the different magical properties of trees, and see if you can find a branch that meets your needs. The branch should be 12 to 18 inches long. In many traditions of Wicca and witchcraft, it's considered courteous to make some sort of offering to the tree, or at least to thank it for its contribution.

  2. Step 2

Sand the branch down, removing all the excess bark. This will help clean the branch, and also infuse it with your own magical energy. If you have a knife, you may use that instead to scrape off the bark or any dirt. If you wish to, use your knife to carve the branch to a specific shape or angle.

  3. Step 3

Use the woodburning kit to decorate your wand. You can emblazon it with magical signs and symbols, cover it in runes, or even put your name on it. This is purely optional, but the more you do to your wand, the more it will become connected to you personally.

  4. Step 4

Add a crystal or gemstone. Some people like to place a crystal at the end of their wand. Use other craft supplies to finish decorating your wand--metal wire, leather thongs or beads are popular items. You may also wish to oil your wand to keep it from becoming brittle over time.

  5. Step 5

Charge your wand in a magical setting. Using ritual, consecrate your wand so that it will become a magical tool for you to use in future workings.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wands are very personal magical tools. Don't loan yours out, and don't handle someone else's unless they expressly give you permission to do so.
