How to Clean a Barbeque Grill

There is nothing quite like the smell and taste of a meal on a barbeque grill. It can bring back memories of lazy summer days and fond family get-togethers. Grilling the food is the fun part, however, keeping the grill cleaned and ready for the next cookout is generally not at the top of anyone's to-do list. Yet, a clean grill is worth the effort based on the end product it yields. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Wire brush
  • Large bucket
  • Small bucket
  • Water
  • Mild cleaning detergent
  • Clean rag
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

    • 1

      Remove cooking grates from grill. Scrub grates with wire brush to remove as much debris as possible.

      Fill a large bucket with warm water and mild cleaning detergent such as dish soap. Place grate in water to soak.

      Dump any leftover coals into a fire-safe container and remove bottom coal grate from grill. Using a wire brush, brush any remaining coal residue out of grill and rinse with water. Place coal grate into bucket with grilling grate.

      Fill a small bucket with warm soapy water. With a clean cloth, wipe any remaining dirt out of the grill.

      Cover bottom of grill with aluminum foil, punching out the area around the ventilation holes.

      Remove cooking and coal grates from water. Using wire brush, thoroughly scrub each grate. Use water to rinse dirt and soapy water.

      Coat all inside surfaces of the barbeque grill with cooking spray. In addition, thoroughly spray the cooking and coal grates. This will make future cleanings easier.

      Replace grates in grill. Allow grill to dry thoroughly before using.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have container large enough to fit a grilling grate, consider using a small wading pool. Use a wire brush and soapy water to scrub and loosen tough stains from the grill surface. If the cooking grate still has food debris stuck to it, return to warm soap water and soak for 10-15 minutes or more and then re-scrub with wire brush. Allow a few extra minutes of pre-heating time after you clean your grill to ensure all the cleaning solution has cooked off the surface.

  • Never place coals in a paper bag. Even a small ember can start a fire.
